WhatsApp Channels provide a private one-way broadcast tool that allows organizations, content creators, and local businesses to share news, updates, links, and photos directly with followers. Unlike standard WhatsApp group chats, Channels keep the administrator's phone number and the subscribers' contact details completely hidden from one another.
This guide walks you through creating your own WhatsApp Channel, configuring privacy settings, inviting subscribers, and managing multi-administrator permissions.
1. How to Create a New WhatsApp Channel
Channels are built directly into the Updates tab alongside Status stories.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Open WhatsApp on your iPhone or Android phone.
- Tap the Updates tab at the bottom (or top) of the screen.
- Scroll down past status updates to the Channels header.
- Tap the Plus icon (+) next to Channels and select Create channel.
- Tap Continue to accept the WhatsApp Channel Guidelines and Terms of Service.
- Set Channel Identity:
- Channel Name: Enter your business, community, or project name (up to 64 characters).
- Description: Provide a 2–3 sentence overview explaining what subscribers will receive (e.g., daily tech tips, urgent weather alerts).
- Channel Icon: Upload a high-resolution logo or square graphic (minimum 500x500 pixels).
- Tap Create channel. Your broadcast feed is live immediately.
2. Channel Privacy & Subscriber Protections
WhatsApp enforces strict subscriber anonymity rules:
- Phone Numbers Hidden: Neither you nor your subscribers can see the phone numbers or profile pictures of people following your channel.
- Separate from Personal Chats: Messages in channels do not trigger individual read receipts or blue ticks.
- 30-Day Server History: Channel updates are automatically stored on WhatsApp servers for up to 30 days before older broadcast messages expire.
3. How to Invite Followers and Share Channel Links
- Open your Channel and tap the Channel Name at the top to access Channel Info.
- Tap Forward to send directly to your existing WhatsApp chats and Status.
- Tap Copy link or Share link to distribute your custom channel URL (
https://whatsapp.com/channel/...) across websites, newsletters, and social media. - Tap Share via QR code to generate a printable QR code for physical storefronts or event banners.
4. How to Assign and Manage Channel Admins
You can invite up to 16 trusted colleagues to manage posts, edit descriptions, and publish updates on your behalf.
- Open your Channel and go to Channel Info.
- Tap Transfer ownership or Invite admins.
- Select contacts from your phonebook and send the administrative invitation link.
- Invited users have 30 days to accept. As the Channel Creator, you retain master permissions and can revoke admin privileges at any time.
