As you back up photos from smartphones, download email attachments multiple times, and copy project folders, identical duplicate files quietly accumulate across your computer's drives.
Finding and removing these duplicate files manually takes days. Here is how to automatically find and purge duplicate files on Windows and Mac.
Method 1: Using DupeGuru (Free & Open-Source for Windows/Mac/Linux)
DupeGuru is an exceptional open-source duplicate file finder that uses SHA-1 hash matching and fuzzy audio/picture comparison algorithms:
- Download and install dupeGuru (free from official GitHub/website).
- Open the application and select your scan type: Standard, Music, or Picture.
- Click the + (Plus) button to add the folders or drives you want to audit (e.g., Pictures, Downloads, or your external hard drive).
- Click Scan.
- dupeGuru displays duplicate files grouped together with exact byte matching.
- Check the duplicate copies and click Actions > Send Marked to Trash.
Method 2: Using Apple Photos Duplicate Merge on Mac
If you have duplicate pictures in your Apple Photos library:
- Open the Photos app on your Mac (running macOS Ventura or newer).
- In the left sidebar, click Duplicates.
- Apple automatically identifies identical and near-identical photos.
- Click Merge [X] Exact Duplicates; macOS merges metadata, tags, and albums while keeping only the single highest-resolution original file.
Method 3: Find Duplicate Files in Windows Using PowerShell
For power users who prefer no third-party software:
- Press Windows Key + X and select Terminal (Admin).
- Run a command to list identical MD5/SHA256 hashes in your target directory:
```powershell
Get-ChildItem -Path "C:\Users\YourUsername\Downloads" -Recurse -File |
Get-FileHash | Group-Object -Property Hash | Where-Object { $_.Count -gt 1 }
```
- Review the duplicate file paths outputted by the shell.
