By default, WhatsApp applies aggressive compression algorithms to photos and videos sent in chat threads to conserve mobile data and reduce server loads. This compression frequently turns sharp 48MP camera shots and 4K HDR videos into fuzzy, pixelated files.
Thankfully, WhatsApp now provides two distinct methods to send your photos and videos in crystal-clear high definition or completely uncompressed in their original raw bitrates.
Method 1: The Native HD Toggle (Best for Quick HD Sharing)
WhatsApp includes an official HD button directly inside the media preview screen.
Step-by-Step for iOS and Android:
- Open any WhatsApp chat conversation.
- Tap the + (plus) icon on iPhone or the Paperclip / Camera icon on Android.
- Select Photos or Gallery and pick the photo or video you want to share.
- At the top of the editing screen (next to the crop and sticker tools), locate the HD icon.
- Tap HD.
- A menu will appear with two choices:
- Standard quality: Compresses resolution to save space.
- HD quality: Transmits the media in full high-definition resolution (e.g., up to 4096 × 2692 for photos and 720p/1080p for video).
- Tap Done and hit Send.
- An HD badge will appear in the bottom-left corner of the message bubble to confirm high-definition transmission.
Method 2: Send as a 'Document' (100% Uncompressed & Raw Quality)
While the HD toggle sends higher resolution, WhatsApp still slightly recompresses the color space and strips EXIF metadata (camera aperture, ISO, GPS tags). To send a file with zero compression, zero quality loss, and full EXIF metadata:
On iPhone (iOS):
- Open the Photos app and select your photo or video.
- Tap the Share button and choose Save to Files.
- Pick a folder (e.g., On My iPhone or Downloads) and tap Save.
- Open WhatsApp, tap the + icon, and select Document.
- Tap Choose from Files and select the saved photo/video.
- Tap Send. The file sends as a raw image/video up to 2GB in size!
On Android:
- In WhatsApp chat, tap the Paperclip icon.
- Select Document.
- Tap Browse documents (or Choose from gallery).
- Select your raw camera image (
.jpg,.png,.dng) or video (.mp4,.mov). - Tap Send. WhatsApp will bypass all compression filters and transmit the exact byte-for-byte master file.
How to Set HD as Default in WhatsApp Settings
You can configure WhatsApp to default to HD quality for every photo and video you send:
- Open WhatsApp Settings.
- Tap Storage and Data.
- Under Media upload quality, tap Media upload quality.
- Select HD quality. Note: This uses approximately 3x to 6x more mobile data per upload.
